Natural Hypertension Treatment and You: Definition, Causes, and Treatment Options

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is prevalent in about 33.5% of the adult population aged 20 and over. In 2012, 34 million patients visited their doctors with hypertension as their chief complaint. (1)

What is Hypertension?

Natural Hypertension TreatmentBlood pressure is determined by two things: the amount of blood your heart pumps and the amount of resistance in your arteries. The more blood your heart pumps and the narrower the arteries, the higher the blood pressure. Hypertension can be asymptomatic, but this does not mean it is not damaging. Uncontrolled hypertension can cause serious health complications, including heart attack and stroke. (2)

What Causes Hypertension?

There are two kinds of hypertension: primary (or essential) and secondary. Secondary hypertension is caused by something outside of the cardiovascular system, such as kidney or thyroid disease, sleep apnea, or chronic alcohol use. Essential hypertension is more common, and research shows that dysregulation of the nervous system is largely responsible. Specifically, the sympathetic nervous system (your “fight or flight” response) is overactive, and the parasympathetic nervous system (your “rest and digest” response) is under active. (3)(4) So what can be done?

Want help managing your seasonal allergies in Seattle? Check out Dr. Andrew Simon’s recent interview with Seattle Magazine titled, “Sneezin’ Season: Seattle’s Seasonal Allergies” with some simple comparison’s to traditional allergy medications.  Not every one reacts to the same allergens, while it is important to identify potentially triggering allergens from the trees or plants in your neighborhood. Treating allergies with natural medicine, is also about identifying the total load on the immune system, that causes the hyper reactive allergy response in the first place, and about bringing down the total load on the body over time, so you can continue enjoying the outdoors without having to rely on antihistamines, or even herbal supplements over time.

The total body load includes the contributions of stress, diet, food intolerances, hydration, current health conditions, and your overall immune system

Eating Organic: Why You Should Make The Switch

Eating organic doesn’t need to be as challenging as it sounds. Simple truth is that the soil the plant is grown in can make the biggest difference in nutrient quality, and potential for harmful chemicals if proper precautions are taken. Check out www.ewg.org for the latest clean fifteen and dirty dozen foods.

The clean fifeteen are a list of foods that you can eat that don’t have to be organic because of the general nature of how they are grown.

The dirty dozen is a list of foods, you definitely want to by organic because of their knon treatment with herbicides or pesticides.

Sample BIA Data printout for Weight Loss Support

In a weight loss focused session, your health markers can be tracked to determine Body Fat Percentage, Lean Muscle Mass %, Water Balance, and your Basal Metabolic rate. Tracking these at each visit goes above and beyond tracking a number on a scale, empowering  you with the feedback to keep you motivated to stay on track. See an example, sample report:

Every weight loss program should include a body movement approach, with Dr Andrew Simon’s background in exercise science and kinesiology, he can help customize a work out plan that is right for your body type.  You can find Dr. Simon even working out regularly at Olympic Athletic Club across the street from Fit Naturopathic.

Dieting alone may cause a reduction in fat-free mass, and can actually reduce the body’s ability to burn calories. The holy grail of weight management is to maintain or increase fat-free mass. This is not always possible during periods of weight loss. So the goal is to minimize reduction of fat-free mass. A typical patient will experience a loss of 0.45 pounds of fat-free mass and 0.55 pounds of fat mass for each pound of weight loss while dieting without maintenance exercise.
